With temperatures soaring to the mid-90s this week, it's important to make sure your cooling system stays in working order.

The last thing a homeowner wants is a malfunctioning AC. As it turns out, there are things that can be done now to keep your AC calm, your home cool, and your mind collected. We turned to the experts at Thomas & Galbraith Heating, Cooling & Plumbing for the answers.

"There's this 20-degree range where typically you want to set the thermostat no cooler than 20 degrees ambient outside," said Corey Trojanowski, the marketing manager at Thomas & Galbraith.

If it's 95 outside, it's recommended to have your thermostat at 75.

2. Keep curtains closed.

"Direct sunlight beaming in on your home through an open window is a surefire way to try to heat up the home faster," Trojanowski said.

3. Check air filters.

"Checking your filter and making sure you're changing that on a regular basis. Having annual maintenance and inspections, things like that, just to make sure all the components and electrical things are working properly. A lot of that really keeps the system running when it's needed most, like this week," he said.

4. Keep the air circulating. Think about ceiling fans.

"If you have them, definitely use them. Even if they won't cool the temperature in the room that the fan is in, at least it's going to feel better circulating that air," Trojanowski said.

If you find yourself in a hot situation with your AC, it's recommended to call your go-to company sooner rather than later. Thomas & Galbraith said they've had an influx of calls this week already.
